A Natural Remedy for Cold Season

We all know that there's no cure for the common cold, but one simple at-home and natural remedy has been found to decrease upper-respiratory tract infections in cold suffers by a whopping 40 percent. That's a lot! So what is this miracle drug? The act of gargling salt water. Yep, that's it.

Doctors at the Mayo Clinic recommend dissolving half a teaspoon of salt in a full glass of warm water and gargling the solution for a few seconds before spitting it out. The concoction may not cure your cold, but it will reduce symptoms, researchers say!

Does Yoga Make You Happier?

For years, exercise has been shown to improve mood and reduce stress. But when it comes to what type of exercise is best for getting those feel-good emotions going, yoga may reign supreme, according to a recent study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Researchers found an association between yoga postures, increased GABA levels and decreased anxiety. Low GABA levels are associated with depression and other widespread anxiety disorders, so having higher levels leads to improved mood. More research needs to be done, the study author says, although the finding suggests that the practice of yoga should be considered as a potential therapy for certain mental disorders.

Research Says Massage Benefits Aren't Just Skin Deep

Everyone knows that massages feel good. And although regular massage has been shown to reduce stress and improve overall wellness and mood, there isn't a lot of research to explain exactly what goes on inside the body. Until now!

A recent study published in the The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that massage decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol in blood and saliva, and in arginine vasopressin, a hormone that can lead to increases in cortisol. Subjects who received massages also had an increase in the number of lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that are part of the immune system.

The Importance of Rest When Working Out

We've all heard the expression "No pain, no gain." But oh how wrong that saying is when it comes to working out. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal recently talked about exactly how and why rest is so essential to any one who exercises regularly--and especially for those who train for endurance events like triathlons and marathons. Bottom line, always listen to your body, cross train regularly, and when your trainer says slow down, do it! It's for your own good.
