First Medical Assistant Classes to Begin in March

You probably already know about MTTI's name change to WellSpring School of Allied Health, but do you know about the school's new Medical Assisting program? Medical Assisting is one of the fastest growing professions in the health care field and WellSpring is bringing it's collaborative and wellness-focused teaching approach to train the next generation of health care professionals.

The 21-year-old school added a personal training program two years ago as part of its commitment to being the leader in wellness education in the Midwest. The first medical assisting students will begin classes in March at the Kansas City campus. For more details, read details here!


The Perfect Valentine's Day Gift: Couples Massage

Held the Saturday after Valentine's Day, this Couples Massage workshop is designed for all couples who would like to deepen their relationship through the exploration of compassionate, loving, sensuous (non-sexual) touch. Using simple, easy-to-learn intuitive techniques, you will learn to give (and receive) a relaxing, stress-reducing full-body massage. This open-to-the-public class requires no massage background and will include lecture, discussion, demonstrations and hands-on practice in a safe, supportive environment.

Jack LaLanne Dies at 96

An icon in the fitness industry died yesterday. At the age of 96, health and fitness guru Jack LaLanne passed away. Many of us remember LaLanne for touting the benefits of good nutrition and physical exercise. In fact, it's said that LaLanne used both to overcome a frail and sickly childhood. Along the way he inspired others, created the whole juicing craze and will no doubt be remembered for incredible feats, such as towing 70 rowboats with seventy people on board for a mile and a half across Long Beach Harbor, all while handcuffed and with his feet shackled -- at the age of 70.

Take Your Practice to the Next Level with Advanced Esalen Massage

If you know basic Swedish massage or have taken Intro to Esalen, why not further your skills by learning Advanced Esalen? Esalen massage is an exquisite, eclectic, body-mind-spirit form, grounded in Swedish but borrowing freely from other forms, such as energy, Thai, and trigger point.

This WellSpring CE class will include a review of the basic principles of Esalen, along with demonstration and practice of specific detail-work that may be incorporated into an Esalen massage or any type of massage. More than 25 techniques will be presented and practiced, many adapted from Thai massage. Students will be encouraged to try them all, then focus on those that have the most appeal to each individual. It is recommended that students first take Intro to Esalen or have other Esalen experience, however all massage therapists are welcome.

Want a Healthy Glow? Eat Your Veggies

You might think that time in the sun or even a sunless tanner will give you a healthy, more attractive glow, but there's a new miracle beauty product in town: Veggies! According to new research, eating a diet high in fruits and veggies gives you a healthier glow than the sun.

The research, which was published in the Journal Evolution and Human Behaviour credits substances called carotenoids for the glow. Carotenoids, responsible for the red coloring in carrots and tomatoes, are antioxidants that help soak up damaging compounds produced by the stresses and strains of everyday living. Carotenoids are also important for the immune and reproductive systems.

Fruits and vegetable intake is also closely linked to improved body composition and lower rates of all chronic diseases. So this is just another perk to eating a healthy diet! Learn Sports Taping for Pain and Stability

During this informational seminar, Dr. Jason Moss will discuss the history and benefits of kinesiotaping, and show you some introductory taping applications, including taping techniques for the neck, back and extremities. This course is open to anyone who works in the health care industry including massage therapists and personal trainers.

Dr. Moss is an internationally recognized functional capacity evaluator with level II kinesiotaping training. He is also the president of KC CORE at Truman Medical Center, the only hospital credentialed chiropractic rehabilitation practice in the Midwest.

Massage Reduces Tension Headaches

Are you plagued by tension headaches? If so, it's time to book an appointment with your massage therapist! Researchers have recently found that the psychological and physiological state of patients with tension headache improves within just 24 hours of receiving a 30-minute massage.

The study that was published in the American Journal of Manipulative Physiological and Therapeutics reported that a 30-minute massage on cervical trigger points improved autonomic nervous system regulation, improved patients psychological state, and reduced stress and anxiety.

Meditation and Weight-Loss

You already probably know how awesome meditation can be for your overall health, but did you know that this mind-body practice may also be able to help you lose weight? Deepak Chopra was recently on The Dr. Oz Show and talked about how meditation can help you reduce stress and become more present, thereby causing you to eat less (because you're more aware of your hunger and how much you're eating) and allowing your body to reduce cortisol and other stress hormones that can cause you to store fat (especially in your belly area).
